Indiana group aims to shame litter bugs with new signs

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - A group that oversees several Indiana nature areas is taking a snarky approach to fight littering problems.

The NICHES Land Trust has started putting up signs at its Lafayette-area sites with the question "Why are you littering?" across the top. Below are answers: "I am a jerk," ''I don't care about natural areas," ''Mommy still cleans up after me," and "All of the above."

Land trust executive director Gus Nyberg says the anti-littering culture has become frayed and the group is trying to turn that around. He says anyone offended by the signs is probably part of the littering problem.

Nyberg says he's heard from people across the country after the group's Facebook posting of the sign, which has been shared thousands of times.
