COD Lifelong Learning adds groups on current events, grandparenting

College of DuPage's Lifelong Learning program is offering two new groups for special interests this fall - one on current event issues and one on grandparenting and intergenerational relationships.

"The goal of the new Student Interest Groups program is to foster student learning opportunities outside of the traditional classroom environment," said Julie Konczyk, continuing education program coordinator. "The SIGs are led by student volunteers and provide a great opportunity for students to share their knowledge and passion for a topic while simultaneously learning from other students who are doing the same. Through our Lifelong Learning program, we are always seeking new ways to serve the growing population of older adults in our district."

Student Interest Groups are formed by a collective of people with a common interest in a specific subject. Providing an environment for members to participate as active learners, the groups are independent and self-directed, and participants decide meeting times as well as how the group will function.

This fall's offerings include:

• The Forum: Dialogue to Challenge Our Thinking: The Student Interest Group is designed to challenge thinking and broaden perspectives through open dialogue and active investigation into current issues ranging from the changing demographics of retirees to nuclear disarmament and climate change. The group will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. on the first Monday of each month beginning Oct. 2.

• The Joys and Challenges of Grandparents and Grand Friendships: Led by author and intergenerational expert Helene Block Fields, the Student Interest Group is dedicated to intergenerational learning in all forms. Participants will share their own experiences and explore ways to share knowledge and talents through mentorship. The group will meet from 10 a.m. to noon on the first and third Fridays of each month beginning Oct. 6.
