United Way of Elgin to host campaign kickoff Sept. 21

The United Way of Elgin invites the community to the campaign kickoff for the 2017-18 "United We Win" campaign.

A reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in the newly renovated Fox River Room at the Grand Victoria Casino, 250 S. Grove Ave. in Elgin.

The presentation of the Jack Shales Award will be held at 4:45 p.m.

In 2004, Jack Shales, the longest-serving volunteer, celebrated his 50th anniversary with United Way of Elgin. To honor that achievement, the organization created its highest award, the Jack Shales Spirit of Community Award, which is given annually to a company that shows exceptional corporate responsibility and community involvement.

Previous winners include: Grand Victoria Casino, Elgin Community College, Jack and Marlene Shales, Chase Card Services, Hoffer Plastics Corp., Sherman Health, First Community Bank, IHC Construction Companies, City of Elgin, ITW and Seigle's.

Shales began his involvement with United Way in 1954 as a campaign volunteer. He served on the board for many years, including as board chair in 1988. He has also chaired the annual campaign several times, most recently as the Honorary Chair for the 2013-14 campaign. He is one of five Lifetime Directors on United Way's board.

To RSVP, call (847) 741-2259 or visit www.uwelgin.org/2017kickoff.

The reception will feature coconut chicken, bacon-wrapped scallops, Cornucopia Vegetable Quesadilla, and a variety of smoked chicken wings.

The reception is generously provided by the Grand Victoria Casino.
