Suburban police to kick off back-to-school safety campaign
Prospect Heights Police Chief Al Steffen will read to children at Indian Trails Public Library on Wednesday to kick off a back-to-school safety campaign.
Police in 18 suburban communities will watch for students following safety rules around school zones and reward them with vouchers for a free "Happy Meal" and a book redeemable at participating McDonald's in September.
Steffen, along with officers from other communities, will read books to children at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the library at 355 Schoenbeck Road in Wheeling. Participating police departments include Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Glen Ellyn, Glenview, Grayslake, Lake Villa, Lincolnshire, McHenry, Mount Prospect, Naperville, Niles, Prospect Heights, Schaumburg, West Chicago, Wheeling, Wood Dale, Woodridge and Yorkville.
