St. Edward rolls over Walther Christian

St. Edward negated a Walther Christian front line Friday night that featured two players who tipped the scales at more than 250 pounds with their own offensive line. The Green Wave's front four created enough opportunities for the Green Wave to route the Broncos 54-0 in a Metro Suburban League crossover game at Greg True Field in Elgin.

"They were big up front but we've got some big guys too that are pretty athletic. Our guys have pretty good techniques - our line play has been good all year. I've got faith in our line to be able to block anybody," said St. Edward coach Mike Rolando. "You can't throw and run like we do without having good guys up front so we've got to tip our hats to line guys."

St. Edward (2-1) scored on 5 of its 7 first half possessions

Quarterback Dylan Mlinarich led a balanced Green Wave attack that rolled up a total of 434 yards - 246 passing and 188 rushing.

Tyler Holte scored St. Edward's first touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Mlinarich, 2 minutes into the game. Dave Madden increased the lead to 13-0 on a 4-yard TD run, the first of the senior's 3 scores. Ryan Pomeroy connected with Mlinarich for 29-yard score to give the Green Wave a 19-0 first quarter lead.

St. Edward crossed the goal line twice in the second quarter to take a 32-0 at halftime. The first score was on a 5-yard run by Angel Garcia (7 carries for 69 yards). Madden scored the second on a 12-yard pass from Mlinarich.

Madden tallied his third TD of the night to open the Green Wave's second half scoring on a 27-yard run. Madden gained a total of 126 yards. He rushed for 49 yards on 4 carries and caught 5 passes for 77 yards.

St. Edward scored another touchdown when Nick Wright blocked a Walther Christian (0-3) punt at its 15-yard line. Ben Harrington recovered the ball in the end zone putting the Green Wave ahead 46-0 at the end of the third quarter.

Wright also put the final points on the board scoring on a 13-yard run half way through the fourth quarter.

"We started by trying to throw the ball a little bit, we wanted to get Holte involved after being off last week," Rolando said. "Then we established the running game in the second half."

Dave Falco preserved the shutout when he batted down a Kenoje Evanson pass in the Broncos' end zone on the last play of the game.
