Judson to host prayer vigil, fundraiser for Hurricane Harvey survivors
Judson University in Elgin has a marathon of music, worship, prayer vigil and testimonials Saturday to raise funds for Hurricane Harvey survivors.
The 26.2-hour event, hosted by the university's Demoss Center for Worship in the Performing Arts, begins at 12:45 p.m. at the Thulin Auditorium in Thompson Hall, 1151 N. State St. It culminates with a Celebration of Giving Concert at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Hurricane Harvey made landfall Aug. 25, wreaking havoc in southeast Texas. As of Monday afternoon, statewide officials reported 60 storm-related deaths. Thousands of displaced residents remain in shelters in Texas and Louisiana as floodwaters recede and recovery efforts continue.
The prayer event is open to students and anyone in the community willing to share testimonies, musical talents and special prayer requests.
"I know prayer is essential to help victims of this tragedy," said Judson Music Department Chairman Robert Kania, who is directing the fundraiser. "Although we do not require contributions for participation, we do hope to raise as (much) funds as possible for the victims of Hurricane Harvey."
He added, this is Judson's first marathon fundraiser for any natural disaster relief effort.
"We are really looking forward to supporting our fellow citizens in Texas in this way," said Kania, who will be playing the piano during all open slots and urges fellow musicians to join him. "I am hoping for a big response. My fingers will be grateful to receive some rest."
Sunday's concert will feature internationally acclaimed soprano Maria Kanyova and pianist Huntley Brown, along with Judson's music faculty and the university choir under the direction of Warren Anderson.
