Italy's anti-doping agency seeks to lengthen Errani's ban

ROME (AP) - Italy's anti-doping agency is appealing to lengthen the two-month ban handed to former French Open finalist Sara Errani.

NADO Italia - which operates independently from the Italian Olympic Committee - filed a "statement of appeal" with the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport, without specifying how long of a ban it is seeking.

Errani blamed food contamination from her mother's breast cancer medication after testing positive for the banned substance letrozole in a test taken in February.

An International Tennis Federation adjudication panel ruled that Errani's fault was "at the lower end of the scale."

The 30-year-old Errani was informed of the test results on April 28.

Errani's ban expires on Oct. 2, precluding her from playing at the U.S. Open.
