70-year sentence handed man in basketball player's death

WHEATON, Ill. (AP) - A 70-year prison sentence has been handed a suburban Chicago man convicted in the 2014 murder of a former professional basketball player.

The lengthy prison sentence was handed Friday to 54-year-old Jeffrey Keller for the shooting death of 37-year-old Nate Fox.

Fox was ambushed outside his Bloomingdale home by Keller, who DuPage County prosecutors say mistakenly believed the younger man was having an affair with a woman Keller was interested in.

Prosecutors say the 6-foot-9 Fox was shot after returning home from his car-salesman job. Keller unscrewed a lightbulb and waited in the shadows outside the garage and shot Fox twice.

Keller claimed the shooting was accidental and happened during a struggle.

Fox scored 1,036 points in two seasons with Maine after transferring from Boston College. He later played in Europe, including in Germany, Estonia and France. He ended his 13-year pro career in Belgium in 2012.
