South Elgin church to celebrate 125 years with ice cream, bell ringing

Free ice cream and an opportunity to ring the 1893 church bell will be part of the fun during the 125th open house anniversary celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, at South Elgin Community United Methodist Church, 400 W. Spring St.

Tours will be offered through the church and the food pantry after remarks by local officials, including South Elgin Village President Steve Ward, Kane County Board member Mike Kenyon, and Elgin Township Supervisor Franklin Ramirez, as well as current Pastor Jan Comerford.

Also seen on the tour will be one of the original pews that was donated to the church in 1892 from the Elgin State Mental Hospital which was redecorating at the time.

Members of the Scouts, Jazzercise, and Dragon Kido also will be participating in the event.

The public is invited.

On Sunday, Sept. 17, the church will hold a "Homecoming Celebration" including former pastors and members at 9 a.m.
