Grayslake road closing Aug. 16 for flood repairs

The Lake County Division of Transportation will close Center Street between Route 83 and Atkinson Road in Grayslake for more than two weeks beginning Aug. 16 to replace a large culvert damaged by last month's flooding, officials announced Monday.

The culvert was scheduled for replacement next year, but heavy flash flooding on July 12-13 undermined the structure, leading to a partial collapse of the pavement.

Immediately after the flood, the division of transportation temporarily repaired the pavement and lowered the weight limits for the road. A mobile traffic camera was installed, allowing engineers to monitor the road condition and keep it open as long as possible while design and engineering plans were developed and construction activities coordinated.

Now that all of the pieces are in place, a full road closure is necessary to replace the culvert, officials said.

The closure will begin Aug. 16, when crews will remove the old culvert, install the new culvert and then replace the pavement, The road is expected to reopen Sept. 1.

The posted detour will use Atkinson Road, Route 120 and Route 83.
