Elmhurst Animal Center to host adoption event

You can meet cats and dogs looking for a home on Aug. 19 when the Elmhurst Animal Care Shelter sponsors an event that's part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters pet adoption drive.

The shelter will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day at 850 S. Riverside Drive in Elmhurst for folks to meet some potential furry friends.

As part of Clear the Shelters day, the rescue group Magnificent Mutts & Meows has teamed with nearly 700 shelters across the country, NBC-owned television stations and Telemundo to help find homes for animals in need.

Almost 54,000 pets found their forever homes in 2016 through the Clear the Shelters event.

Elmhurst Animal Care Center is a full-service veterinary hospital and longtime partner of Magnificent Mutts. The state-of-the-art clinic also offers boarding, grooming and training.

Each year, 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the U.S. simply because too many pets find their way into shelters and too few people consider adoption when looking for a pet.

By adopting, you make a loving animal part of your family and open up shelter space for another animal who might desperately need it. Most rescue animals are happy, healthy pets just waiting for someone to take them home.

Linda Latelle, founder of Magnificent Mutts & Meows, has been rescuing animals for years and started the nonprofit organization in 2001.

She has rescued thousands of dogs since her start, and recently made local headlines when her team rescued a few groups of special dogs. Partnering with the Humane Society International, Latelle and others rescued the "Magnificent 10" and saved them from slaughter on South Korean dog meat farms.

A nonprofit, all-breed rescue, Magnificent Mutts & Meows features dedicated volunteers who provide love, hope and a safe sanctuary to animals in need.
