And, they're off! Million Week starts in Arlington Heights

Friday night marked the unofficial kickoff to Million Week in Arlington Heights, where thousands came out to enjoy the annual Mane Event downtown block party.

Named for a horse's mane, the festival started in 2000, was originally held the night before the Arlington Million race at Arlington International Racecourse. A decade later, interest from restaurants led to an expansion to a second day on Saturday - called the Taste of Arlington Heights - and moving the fests to the weekend before the Million.

This year's Mane Event featured 71 companies in a business expo, food from some two dozen restaurants, kids activities and music. The Taste continues from noon to 11 p.m. Saturday at Vail Avenue and Campbell Street.
