Letter: School systems lose focus on school role

The other day the mail brought ‘Discover' to our door, a circular billing itself as ‘High School District 214 Community Education Program Guide.”

A lot of my money goes to District 214. I thought it was supposed to be in support of the High Schools. If so, how does the district justify offering classes (under the banner of Community Education) such as ‘Oil Painting Intermediate' or ‘A Taste of Square Dancing'. Don't you think this sounds like something the private sector or a park district would more appropriately offer? And how about District 214's class in ‘Gentle Yoga' or ‘Belly Dancing for Fitness and Fun'. Seems like anyone with an idea gets on the train.

How much money does District 214 spend on these programs? Including administrative time and effort, do the fees from these programs allow the district to at least break even? And even if so, by what authority does the district support such programs?

‘High School District 214'. It's the high school part of this that I expect my tax dollars to be supporting. As for the rest, talk about mission creep!
