Elgin's Wing Park park still closed after storm
Wing Park in Elgin remains closed due to storm damage, but its nine-hole golf course reopened Tuesday afternoon.
Parks and Recreation Director Randy Reopelle said he hopes the park can reopen by Wednesday afternoon.
The park's pool, formally the Wing Park Family Aquatic Center, has been open all along, but access is limited to the McClure Avenue park entrance.
The National Weather Service declared Friday's storm a "microburst" with 70 to 90 mph winds and tornado-like damage, city officials said.
Several trees were damaged, some of them split near the base, and the golf course was flooded, Reopelle said.
"The combination of high winds and a lot of rain created a situation that is taking several days to clean up," he said.
A concert at Wing Park by the country band "Wild Daisy" scheduled for Tuesday night is rescheduled for 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Festival Park, during National Night Out, city spokeswoman Molly Center said.
Other areas that remain closed are Walton Island on the Fox River; the intersection of Linden and Preston avenues, near Lords Park; and Duncan Avenue at Trout Park Boulevard, Center said.
