Beware giving too much power to 51 percent

Regarding a July 7 letter to the editor, Mr. Troland's comments offered only "assumed or accepted facts." He did not provide any information supporting the percentages he based his letter upon. More troubling, while the letter came across as reasoned, he subtly restated the ongoing liberal/progressive mantra (read that a rewrite of history) that we live in a democracy - a land where 51 percent of "those who vote" can take whatever they want from the rest, with the support (by force if deemed appropriate) of local, state or federal government.

Whether you understand the difference, between a democracy and a democratic republic, be careful what you envision the benefits of a pure democracy are. Remember, you are only 2 percent away from your "once like-minded" neighbors deciding they want "the stuff" that you have worked for all your life.
