Monument to commemorate deaths of poor, unidentified people

CHICAGO (AP) - Religious and Cook County officials will unveil a black granite monument to mark the gravesites of poor, unidentified and unborn people during a service at a Chicago cemetery.

The Archdiocese of Chicago says the event at Mount Olivet Cemetery will be held Thursday afternoon. Cardinal Blase Cupich (blayz SOO'-pich), Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and other elected officials are expected to attend.

Cupich says in a statement the monument will commemorate the lives of the deceased and demonstrate that every life is valuable and should be honored.

The service will include the burial of more than 100 people, including five who were never identified.
