Group touts early success with new Chicago crime hotline
CHICAGO (AP) - An anti-crime group in Chicago says a new crime hotline established in May has generated more than 350 tips deemed credible enough to pass on to law enforcement.
The Chicago Crime Commission says the aim has been to encourage people who might otherwise be wary of contacting police directly to call in with anonymous tips.
The Anonymous Crime Reporting Hotline is accessible to anyone in the Chicago area. The early marketing focus was on residents in neighborhoods hard hit by violence. But the advocacy group says it'll begin advertising the service more widely.
It couldn't immediately say Monday how many of the tips to date may have led to arrests.
The hotline number is 888-393-6646. Callers leave a voicemail and the Chicago Crime Commission passes the information to law enforcement.
