Bid approved for new fire training center in downtown Muncie

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - A new fire training center is coming to downtown Muncie.

The (Muncie) Star Press reports (http://tspne.ws/2uCFEkb ) that the city's Board of Works and Public Safety has approved a $330,000 bid to build the center on a lot near Fire Station No. 1.

The project could be completed by this fall. The center will have a 35-seat classroom, a house mock-up to train firefighters on interior rescues and a controlled smoke room.

Deputy fire chief Bret Granger says "the goal is to open up No. 1 as a full-time fire station."

The building has been in use for offices and a training center, but hasn't fully functioned as a fire station in recent years because of structural problems.
