Fire starts in Elgin basement

A basement fire Friday morning in Elgin caused about $30,000 in damage but no injuries, the Elgin Fire Department said.

A neighbor saw smoke coming from a house on the 600 block of Keep Avenue, according to a news release. Firefighters arrived to find flames and smoke coming from the basement windows in the back of the home. They had the fire under control within eight minutes, the news release said.

No one was home at the time of the fire.
