$9.5 million settlement in police excessive force case.

CHICAGO (AP) - The city of Chicago has agreed to pay $9.5 million to a man who was severely injured when he struck his head on the pavement after being shocked with a Taser by a police officer.

The Chicago Tribune (http://trib.in/2sVvKwk ) reports that the city agreed to settle Jose Lopez's federal lawsuit that contended Lopez wasn't combative before Officer Stevan Vidljinovic used the Taser on him in 2011.

A jury in February found that Vidljinovic used excessive force but the two sides reached a settlement amount before the jury could determine damages and this month Lopez's lawyer disclosed the amount in a motion.

If the City Council approves the settlement it would add to the more than $500 million that the city has paid out in lawsuits against police officers.
