Indiana man's self-defense claim rejected in murder appeal

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana Court of Appeals has rejected a man's self-defense claim in the slaying of his wife's former husband.

Thirty-six-year-old Gentry Jackson of Gary received a 48-year sentence for his conviction in the 2015 shooting death of 44-year-old Alec McCloud.

Jackson's appeal argued that he only began shooting after McCloud pointed a gun at him, although a witness testified McCloud was holding a cellphone and not a weapon as he sat in his car outside Jackson's home.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports (http://bit.ly/2rA7k8g ) the appeals court affirmed Jackson's murder conviction Monday in a 3-0 decision that said a Lake County jury was correct to reject his self-defense claim.

The ruling says Jackson fired eight shots at McCloud's car and continued firing "long after any threat posed by McCloud disappeared."
