Police: 2 children shot, wounded within hours in Gary

GARY, Ind. (AP) - Gary police say they will increase patrols after two children were shot and wounded within five hours in the northwest Indiana city.

Gary Police Chief Larry McKinley says a 9-year-old girl was shot while eating dinner with her family inside their home when she was shot about 5 p.m. Monday. A 9-year-old boy was then shot about a mile away while standing in the doorway to his home. McKinley says both children were in stable condition Tuesday after being transferred to an Illinois hospital.

Police say the circumstances of the shootings are under investigation. McKinley says evidence was recovered at both scenes.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports (http://bit.ly/2rzPd26 ) he called the shootings "senseless violence."

Gary City Council President Ron Brewer says he's asked Indiana State Police and sheriff for help.
