One hurt in chain saw attack in Arlington Heights

A domestic dispute turned violent in an Arlington Heights parking lot Monday when one man used a chain saw to attack and injure another man, police said.

The victim suffered a major cut to his forearm but had injuries described as not life-threatening and is expected to survive, according to Deputy Chief Mike Hernandez. The victim was in surgery Monday afternoon at Northwest Community Hospital, Sgt. Chuck Buczynski said.

The attacker, who has not been identified, was taken into police custody at the scene, only partially clothed.

Bloody clothes and a chain saw were on the ground at the crime scene, but police have not released additional details.

The attack occurred about 1 p.m. in the parking lot outside 559 W. Golf Road, police said. It started when a man drove a vehicle into another car carrying the victim and his girlfriend.

Witnesses told ABC 7 Chicago they saw a man sitting in a blue car with a chain saw. When another man in a silver car pulled into the parking lot, the man in the blue car rammed him, then jumped out and began attacking him with the chain saw.

The victim then tried to get away by running into his place of business, witnesses told ABC 7. Witnesses said the chainsaw jammed when the attacker went for the victim's leg.

Cmdr. Nathan Hayes confirmed there was a short chase after the collision and before the attack.

Brandon Biel recorded the attack on his cellphone.

"He drove his car into theirs, came out with a chainsaw, got him in the arm, and (the victim) ran into his workplace," Biel said.

The victim's girlfriend is the key witness and is talking to detectives, police have said. The victim and his girlfriend are employed at one of the businesses in the area, they said. Police say there is no threat to the public.
