New suburban Chicago train station to open in 2018

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Construction is underway on a suburban train station that'll be the first new stop on the Chicago-to-Joliet Heritage Corridor Line since 1984.

The (Joliet) Herald-News (http://bit.ly/2rA1oQt ) reports that the Romeoville Metra Station should be open early next year.

Romeoville Mayor John Noak says the area needs public transportation options. And he says the new station will be a "tremendous asset for the whole region."

The price tag for construction is $4.9 million. Nearly $4 million of that comes from a congestion-mitigation and air-quality grant through the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning. Grants are given based on how many vehicles a project can take off roadways.

There are also plans in the works for a trail system that would provide bicyclists easy access to and from the Romeoville station.
