11-year-old Indiana boy dies when ATV ejects, flips onto him

FRANCISCO, Ind. (AP) - Conservation officers say an 11-year-old boy has died in an all-terrain vehicle accident in southwestern Indiana.

The state Department of Natural Resources says the Gibson County boy was driving the ATV in a field when the vehicle rolled over and ejected him near the town of Francisco.

Authorities say the ATV landed on top of the boy, who was pronounced dead at nearby Gibson General Hospital.

The Princeton Daily Clarion reports that Gibson County's coroner identified the boy killed in Tuesday's afternoon accident as Mitchell M. Steckler of Haubstadt.

Authorities say he was not wearing a helmet or restraint.

A new state law that takes effect July 1 requires anyone under 18 to wear helmets while they are operating or riding on an ATV.
