Mental health board awards challenge funding

The Hanover Township Mental Health Board met recently and awarded $5,000 in challenge funds to the Center for Enriched Living for its new facility in Hoffman Estates.

Challenge funds are disbursed to agencies in the launching of new programs. CEL will offer REACH Northwest, an adult day program, at the new location. Township residents in the program focus on socialization, employment readiness, community involvement, and skill proficiencies. MHB funding will help offset the startup costs of expanding the program to a new location.

"The board is committed to ensuring our neighbors have the programs and resources they need to assist them in achieving full integration, both socially and professionally," said Kathy Biesiadecki, chairperson of the Hanover Township Mental Health Board.

"We will continue to review funding requests from a wide variety of agencies that are committed to serving and improving the lives of township residents."

The board also elected officer positions. Chairperson Biesiadecki was elected to remain in her position, as well as Meghan Nelson as vice-chair and Maureen Lue as secretary.

Following the meeting, the board also said goodbye to longtime member Linda Best. Best served on the board since June of 2009, and opted not to seek reappointment when her term expired on May 31 in order to spend more time with her family.

The volunteer board advocates for increasing the availability and quality of mental health, developmental disabilities and substance abuse services by allocating funds to nonprofit agencies that provide services to township residents. Last year, the board approved more than $1 million in funds to local agencies.

The board meets at 6 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of the month at the township offices, 250 S. Route 59 in Bartlett. The board will meet next on Tuesday, Aug. 22.

Hanover Township serves more than 101,000 residents in portions of the Cook County communities of Streamwood, Elgin, Bartlett, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg.
