Lombard tackles major sewer projects

Lombard public works crews have started their North Broadway Pump Station and Gatz Pond construction projects, which will help reduce combined sewer overflows and basement flooding in the Gatz Pond watershed.

The construction, which began this week, will include the installation of a stormwater pump station and force main, as well as the installation of a 60-inch storm sewer to allow for the separation of the combined sewers serving roughly 450 acres in the Gatz Pond watershed.

"The flooding occurs because the current combined sewer carries sanitary effluent as well as stormwater," said Carl Goldsmith, director of public works.

"The installation of separated sewers will reduce sewer backups, reduce the frequency and duration of combined sewer overflows and basement backups from stormwater, and will enable future connection of private storm drains."

The North Broadway Pump Station and Force Main project is on E. North Broadway between S. Grace and Fairfield, and on S. Grace between E. North Broadway and E. Hickory. Construction will include a new pump station, a force main, and flow monitoring devices.

The new force main will detect potential surcharges during heavy rains and will not allow any additional stormwater to be pumped into the new force main, thus preventing backups.

The Gatz Pond Outfall Project is on S. Chase, between E. North Broadway and E. Maple, and on E. Maple, between S. Chase and S. Westmore-Meyer Avenue.

Construction includes the addition of a new 60-inch storm sewer installation and the reconstruction of Maple Street. Throughout construction, eastbound Maple will be open to local traffic only and motorists will be detoured to Westmore-Meyers via Madison and Lodge.

Throughout the project, residents may experience temporary driveway access limitations and temporary road closures, with no driveway access during the installation of curb/gutter and concrete driveway aprons.

Residents will be notified before access restrictions. Parking permits will be issued to residents for on-street overnight parking and Waste Management collection will occur between 6 and 7 a.m. on regularly scheduled days.
