Work for faster trains under way on central Indiana railroad

FRANKLIN, Ind. (AP) - Work has started in central Indiana on a railroad project that will boost the speed of freight trains using the line.

Crews are now upgrading the line through Franklin as part of Louisville & Indiana Railroad's plan for faster and longer trains between Indianapolis and Louisville, Kentucky. The (Franklin) Daily Journal reports (http://bit.ly/2sIsTob ) federal officials approved the project two years ago but trains still have to slow down after Seymour.

Louisville & Indiana Railroad President John Goldman says the goal is have the work through Franklin and Greenwood finished by early August.

Goldman says the current 25 mph speed limit for trains will be gradually increased to 49 mph on the upgraded tracks.
