Elk Grove Village approves $6.6 public works building upgrade

The first piece of Elk Grove Village's aggressive plan to overhaul its infrastructure was hurriedly approved Memorial Day.

Village board members met on the holiday to approve a $6.6 million contract to renovate the public works garage at 1635 Biesterfield Road. The village will also pay Nicholas & Associates $893,000 to manage the design, bidding, permitting, demolition and construction.

While the project is a small part of the $110 million plan, the village wanted to get it started during the summer construction season, Mayor Craig Johnson said.

The project will add a salt barn, improve the building facade, add storage space and create a small nursery for plants. Officials hope it's done by the end of the year.

Later, the village will build a new public works facility to serve as the department's headquarters, which will replace headquarters at 600 Landmeier Road. Elk Grove Township wants to consolidate its operations into that building when the village moves out.
