School board in northwestern Indiana plans 2 referendums

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - A school board in northwestern Indiana is moving forward with plans for ballot referendums on construction projects and the district's operating budget.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports (http://bit.ly/2qAyoYl ) the board in Hammond voted Tuesday to go ahead with a Nov. 7 vote.

One question will ask voters whether they support a construction referendum to build a new high school and renovate several other buildings. A second referendum will ask voters whether they support the school's operating budget.

Superintendent Walter Watkins says the board is considering a $70 million general fund referendum and a $110 million construction referendum.

The school district operates 20 school buildings as well as the Hammond Area Career Center. It has a total of 25 buildings and about 13,100 students.
