Valparaiso planning body cameras for police officers

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - A northwestern Indiana city is set to become the latest in the state to outfit its police officers with body cameras.

The Valparaiso City Council has approved a five-year contract for $260,000 that will provide the cameras for all 46 officers.

Police Chief Mike Brickner says the department spent two years studying body cameras and tested six camera systems before selecting Utility Associates Inc. of Decatur, Georgia.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports (http://bit.ly/2rTM4dp ) the company uses smartphones programmed to function as body cameras. They're worn inside special vests that prevent them from falling off officers.

The cameras can livestream an incident and the video is stored immediately online.
