Southern Illinois teenager sentenced in 2012 killing

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A southern Illinois judge has sentenced an 18-year-old to 30 years in prison for a fatal shooting when he was just 14.

Madison County state's attorney's office says Mylan T. Newbern pleaded guilty to first-degree murder Friday and was sentenced the same day.

Prosecutors say Newbern shot Charles Weiss once in the chest in 2012 during an attempted robbery in Granite City. The 53-year-old old Weiss was returning from a convenience store when Newbern and several others tried to rob him.

Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons said that "when a 14-year-old makes adult-level dangerous choices, he must suffer the consequences like an adult."

Newbern was initially charged as a juvenile, then as an adult. The Granite City teenager must serve the full sentence. He'll be around 50 when released.
