Reed tosses complete-game shutout for Cougars

In one of the best starts in franchise history, southpaw Cody Reed (3-1) made history by tossing the Kane County Cougars' (22-16) first complete-game, nine-inning shutout since Travis Peterson accomplished the feat on Aug. 31, 2004. In a 1-0 win over the visiting Quad Cities River Bandits (19-19), the Cougars used an RBI double from Mark Karaviotis to earn a closely contested victory.

The historic outing was Reed's second straight start of eight or more frames as the Cougars snap a two-game losing streak to start a brief four-game home stand.

In a well-pitched outing on both sides, the starters made quick works of opposing lineups all night. The contest was locked at 0-0 for the first 6½ innings. For Quad Cities, their right-handed starter Forrest Whitley (1-2) lasted 5 innings on just 1 hit and 1 walk.

The Cougars had to break up a no-hitter in the fifth inning on a base hit for Ramon Hernandez. He was later caught stealing, as the next two swingers struck out to keep the Cougars scoreless.

With a night like that, it would have been a shame if the Cougars failed to provide some support. That support came in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back extra base hits. First, Marcus Wilson tripled to lead off the frame against right-handed reliever Carlos Sanabria (0-1). With the RBI duties, Karaviotis ripped a double to the right-center gap providing the Cougars with a 1-0 advantage. That lone run was the difference as Sanabria suffered the loss in his first Midwest League outing.

In the final inning, Reed broke 100 pitches, but set down the Quad Cities lineup in succession with a strikeout of Stephen Wrenn to cap off the thrilling one-run triumph.
