Girls soccer: Prospect shuts out Niles West

Regional host Prospect had no trouble advancing past its first-round opponent in Glenbrook North girls soccer sectional play on Tuesday.

The Knights, seeded No. 8, handled No. 9 seed Niles West 5-0.

Ella Marzolf had 3 of the goals, and Ashley Welk and Aly Kobler also scored.

Prospect coach Tom Froats praised the defensive efforts of Marissa Valentini, Jalyn Mosley, Natalie Marfilius, and Madalyn Ladd in front of keeper Gianna Rossi.

Next up for Prospect is a 6:30 p.m. Friday regional championship matchup against top-seeded New Trier, which rolled past Maine East 9-0 on Tuesday.

• Glenbrook North stopped Maine West 5-0 in regional play at Glenbrook South.

• Third-seeded Loyola topped No. 14 Leyden 3-0 in regional play at Loyola and advances to face the winner of Wednesday's Maine South-Niles North matchup in a 4:30 p.m. Friday regional title game.

• No. 10 seed Elk Grove sprung a first-round upset by getting a 2-1 victory over seventh-seeded Lane Tech. Amanda Sitkowski had both goals and Rachel Kandefer stopped 6 shots for the Grens, who meet No. 2 seed Evanston in the regional final.

The top-seeded Fillies handled Zion-Benton 10-0 and next meets No. 8 seed Mundelein, a 2-1 winner against Highland Park, in regional final hosted by the Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

at Lake Forest, No. 4 seed Lake Zurich handled Hersey 7-0 in the first game of the session and meets the Palatine/Lake Forest winner for a regional title at 6 p.m. Friday.
