Libertyville High School kicks off 100th anniversary celebration with Centennial Concert
The 2017-18 school year marks the 100th Anniversary of Libertyville High School. The school will officially begin its Centennial Celebration on Thursday, May 18, with a Centennial Concert at 7:30 p.m. in the LHS Auditorium, 708 W. Park Ave., Libertyville. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for students and seniors. Advanced reservations are recommended and can be made at seatyourself.biz/lhs.
The concert will feature the LHS Choirs, Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensembles performing individually and combining to present "Carmina Burana" and Tchaikovsky's legendary "1812 Overture." Several past directors from LHS music ensembles will join the celebration as special guests.
"The concert was planned to kick off the centennial celebration as we look back at the last 100 years of excellence in fine arts at Libertyville High School," LHS Fine Arts Department Supervisor Dustin Helvie said.
At their humble beginnings in 1917, the LHS Orchestra had eight members and the LHS Glee Club had 28 singers. The band was not added until 1938. Today, the LHS Music Department offers four concert bands, four choirs, three orchestras, two jazz bands, AP Music Theory, Guitar, Electronic Music, Pit Orchestra, Jazz Strings, Marching Wildcats, Basketball Pep Band, and four extracurricular a cappella choirs. The LHS music programs are consistently recognized as being among the top high school programs on the local, state and national levels. Many graduates of the program have pursued careers in fine arts.
