Lake County police honor fallen officers
Nearly 100 law enforcement officers turned out Friday to pay tribute to fallen comrades in Lake County.
It's one of several ways people in the suburbs are recognizing fallen officers to mark National Police Week, which begins Sunday. Flags across Illinois will be at half-staff on Monday, Peace Officers Memorial Day, and Elgin will hold a memorial service on Wednesday in front of the police station.
At Friday's Lake County Police Memorial in Waukegan, held in the Lincoln Memorial Plaza outside the Lake County Courthouse, the names of 17 officers were read during the roll call of fallen officers.
The Northern Illinois Pipes and Drums performed "Amazing Grace," the national anthem and taps were played, and there was a 21-gun salute.
Speakers included Lake County sheriff's Sgt. Christopher Covelli, Waukegan Police Chief Wayne Walles, Gurnee Police Chief Kevin M. Woodside of the Lake County Chiefs of Police Association, Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor, Lake County State's Attorney Michael Nerheim and Lake County Sheriff Mark C. Curran Jr.
