Lombard Men's Salon Announces Partnership with Eyes on Cancer

With one in five Americans expected to develop skin cancer over the course of their lifetime, chances are that everyone knows someone who has been affected by skin cancer. That's why 18|8 Fine Men's Salons in Lombard is doing its part and joining the fight against skin cancer.

The salon, which offers a full range of customized, upscale hair and grooming services for men, announced today a partnership with Eyes on Cancer, a national nonprofit organization that educates beauty industry professionals on the prevention and early detection of skin cancer. To date, all of the Lombard salon's stylists have received their certification to recognize the early signs of melanoma.

"Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. There are 3.5 million new cases of skin cancer each year, so the chance of a stylist or barber finding it on a guest's face, head or neck is really quite high," said Kristine Givens, owner of 18|8 Fine Men's Salons in Lombard. "All of our stylists have gone through the Eyes on Cancer certification course, and we're proud to say that we are a certified Eyes on Cancer salon. We are so excited to be able to offer our clients this added service of immeasurable value."

In honor of May as Melanoma Awareness Month, the Lombard salon is also hosting a "Black Out Skin Cancer" event on Tuesday, May 30 from 5 - 8 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from all mini facials and scalp treatments as well as chair massages during the event will go directly to the American Cancer Society in support of their fight against cancer. This partnership signifies the Lombard salon's dedication to its clients and its commitment to our guests providing an exceptional experience. The introduction of this new approach to the early detection of skin cancer offers guests an invaluable - and potentially life-saving - service beyond traditional grooming services.

"18|8 stands on the highest quality, service and ethics. We could not be more proud to have them join us in our fight against skin cancer," said Jeanne Foster, co-founder and vice president of Eyes on Cancer. "One person dies of melanoma every 52 minutes. People visit their hair stylists or other beauty professionals far more often than they visit their dermatologist. That's why we feel it is so important to train the beauty industry to be able to identify signs and make sure the client is aware to have a medical professional check it."
