Chicago State leaders offer plans for the future

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago State University officials say they will work to boost enrollment, resolve financial concerns and improve the reputation of the institution in the coming year.

Interim President Rachel Lindsey was appointed to the post last month. As part of a leadership shake-up, university trustees also appointed former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas to a top administrative post.

Lindsay says she is confident the 150-year-old university can chart a more positive course. She says leaders will tout Chicago State's success stories and its significance as an institution that serves mostly minority students.

Vallas says boosting the university's enrollment after years of declines is a priority. Enrollment fell below 3,600 students in the fall, less than half of what it was seven years ago.

Chicago State has received a fraction of its typical funding from the state over the past 22 months. That has led to reduced spending and layoffs.
