Boys water polo: Palatine prevails at Elk Grove
Palatine's boys water polo team exceeded its seed in gaining a 14-3 victory over Elk Grove in a play-in game of the Hoffman Estates sectional on Tuesday.
Glenn Ingebritson led the scoring effort for the winners with 4 goals, and Sean O'Brien had 3 goals and 15 steals for the Pirates (6-24), who were seeded ninth.
Seniors Sam Spaletto and Dylan White had 2 goals apiece, and senior T.J. May scored once and had 3 assists along with generating 3 exclusions. Connor Wheatley started in goal and stopped 7 shots, while Jerome Gabriel contributed 1 goal, 5 steals and 3 assists and Christian Snyder scored once.
Eighth seed Elk Grove (9-16) got all its scoring from senior Sebastian Strozik.
Palatine advances to a 5 p.m. Thursday matchup against top-seeded Barrington in a sectional quarterfinal contest.
Schaumburg 11, Hoffman Estates 2: Junior Michael Burke had a game-high 4 goals to help the host Saxons advance to a Thursday quarterfinal matchup against Fremd at 8 p.m. in the Hoffman Estates sectional.
Junior Matt Soltau also scored twice and came up with 8 steals for the Saxons (11-14), the sectional's No. 6 seed.
Chris Serrano scored twice for the Hawks (3-26).
Prospect 17, Rolling Meadows 6: The No. 7 seed Knights (13-14) earned a date against No. 2 Conant at 7 p.m. Thursday in a Hoffman Estates sectional quarterfinal by stopping the 10th-seeded Mustangs (2-17).
Buffalo Grove 13, Vernon Hills 3: The Mid-Suburban East champs had no trouble advancing in Deerfield sectional play.
Buffalo Grove (22-9) got 5 goals from Kevin Carr and 4 from Nick Roberts.
The sixth-seeded Bison advanced to an 8 p.m. Thursdsay quarterfinal against No. 3 seed Libertyville.
Highland Park 14, Wheeling 5: The eighth-seeded Giants topped the ninth-seeded Wildcats (2-21) and will meet top seed Stevenson in a 5 p.m. Thursday quarterfinal in the Deerfield sectional.
Maine West 10, Taft 8: The seventh-seeded Warriors (10-21) won their play-in game in the Glenbrook North sectional and will next meet No. 2 seed Niles West at 7 p.m. Thursday.
