Fort Wayne theater renovation project gets $1M from state

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - A Fort Wayne theater built in the 1950s is getting $1 million in state funding to help with its renovation.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation says the Clyde Theatre will receive the money from the Regional Cities Initiative. The state program encourages counties and cities to collaborate on regional development projects.

The theater was built in 1951 and operated for more than 40 years as a cinema that could seat up to 1,800 people. But it's been vacant since the early 1990s.

The state money will be used to help pay for renovations to the theater, turning it into a multi-use facility with a 2,200-person performance hall and a 6,000-square-foot art gallery.

The total project cost is $5 million. Renovations are scheduled to be complete by early next year.
