Oubache State Park fire tower to reopen in spring 2018

BLUFFTON, Ind. (AP) - Visitors to a northeastern Indiana state park will be able to climb its iconic, 100-foot fire tower again next year.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says the group known as Friends of Ouabache (Wabash) State Park raised $75,000 in less than nine months to rehabilitate the fire tower.

Property Manager Dustin Clark tells WANE-TV (http://bit.ly/2qFslyh ) that site work including accessibility improvements has already begun and the fire tower is expected to be restored by fall and open to visitors in spring 2018.

The fire tower was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The top of the tower closed in April 2015 after an inspection showed the tower's steps were rotting, metal supports were rusting, and the structure was in desperate need of new handrails and treads.
