Police identify caller who threatened Indiana high school

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Authorities have identified the person they believe called and threatened a western Indiana high school last month, claiming to be inside with a firearm and explosives, police said Friday.

The person authorities think made the hoax call April 7 about Terre Haute North High School also is implicated in hoaxes in a dozen other states, Terre Haute Police Chief John Plasse said. The person isn't in custody.

"After weeks of investigation this individual was identified and located out of state," Plasse said at a news conference. "It was determined that he did not have the capability or means to carry out the threats he was making."

Police also have arrested a juvenile in the phone threat that prompted dozens of police officers to storm the school. The juvenile faces felony charges including attempted hindering or obstructing detection or disarming of a destructive device and intimidation.

Police are still investigating and that more arrests are expected, Plasse said.

Police have said a male called Terre Haute police and said he was in a bathroom at the school armed with a rifle and a bag of explosives. The caller said he'd begin shooting students if he didn't receive a ransom.

The school's 1,800 students and their teachers were told to shelter in classrooms. Students were later moved while a bomb-sniffing police dog checked the school.
