Softball: Weber's walk-off lifts Kaneland; Cary-Grove upsets Huntley
Morgan Weber's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh broke a 2-2 tie and gave Kaneland a 3-2 win over Geneseo on Wednesday as the Knights close in on a Northern Illinois Big XII East title. Kaneland (17-8-1, 9-1) can clinch a share with one more win and take the championship outright with two more. Weber, whose hit scored Katie Kurzrock, also homered in the game, as did Hannah Theobald. Aly Jesionowski earned the win, pitching a scoreless seventh inning, after Emilee Erickson tossed the first 6 innings striking out seven.
Cary-Grove 5, Huntley 3: The Trojans (4-14, 4-8) handed the Red Raiders (18-5, 11-1) their first Fox Valley Conference loss behind Rachel Stanley, who tossed 4 1/3 innings of relief allowing no earned runs. Emma Hill led Cary-Grove's offense with 2 RBI, Kelly Johnson added 2 hits and an RBI, and Taylor Langguth also had an RBI. Tiffany Giese (17-4) took the loss despite 6 strikeouts while Sofia Tenuta and Taylor Pacana went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Teagan O'Rilley and Autumn Kasal both had 2 hits.
Dundee-Crown 2, Prairie Ridge 0: Sydney Ruggles tossed a 5-hit shutout, striking out 14 and walking one. Deanna Origer had the only RBI for the Chargers (14-10, 6-7 in the Fox Valley Conference) while Ruggles and Cassidy Randl scored runs.
Jacobs 7, Crystal Lake South 4: Savannah Svedman pitched the Golden Eagles (10-9-1, 5-7) to the FVC victory, allowing 7 hits while striking out two in the complete game. All four runs she gave up were unearned. Jacobs, who surpassed last year's victory total with the win, got big games from Kerri Healy (2-3, 3 runs, 2 RBI, HR), Jess Mrzlak (1-4, 2 RBI), Emily Pena (2-3, run) and Hannah Slocum (3-4, RBI). Carly Chovanec went 2-for-4 with 2 runs for the Gators.
Geneva 5, Streamwood 1: The Vikings (21-2, 11-0) broke open a tight game with 2 runs in the sixth and 2 more in the seventh to stay on top of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division. Alyssa Kramer homered, Katie Keller doubled and Kaitlyn Plocinski had 3 hits and 3 RBI for the Vikings, who have won 19 games in a row and host UEC Valley leader West Aurora on Friday. Taylyr Crocilla took the loss for the Sabres (9-9, 5-6), striking out six and allowing 8 hits. Becky Roncone homered off winning pitcher Emily Viebrock (7 IP, 3 hits, 6 strikeouts) for Streamwood's lone run.
St. Charles North 14, South Elgin 7: The North Stars (10-7, 4-5) pounded out 14 hits for the Upstate Eight win led by Ali Moberg (3-3, 3 RBI, HR), Jordyn Wolfe (3-5, 2 runs), Natalie Walters (2-5, 2 runs), Jillian Waslawski (2-4, 2 runs), Kelly Hannigan (2-3, 2 RBI) and Maddie Webb (1-3, 2 RBI). Walters pitched the final 3 1/3 innings allowing no hits or runs while striking out four. Casey Brennan went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs to lead the Storm (12-11, 6-4).
Aurora Christian 10, Westminster Christian 3: The Eagles (8-6) won the Northeastern Athletic Conference matchup over the Warriors (7-7-1) behind Callie Britt's 6 RBI, a 3-hit day by Tori Henning, 2 RBI and 2 runs from Janae Holloway and Grace Folino going 2-for-4 with 2 runs. Noelle Chaney struck out 12 to earn the win. Drew Randazzo and Kristen Mason both had 2 hits for Westminster.
