Baseball: Barrington pulls away in MSL West
Well, that was quick.
With five games left on its Mid-Suburban League schedule, Barrington's baseball team has clinched a tie for the West Division title.
On Thursday, the Broncos got great pitching from starter Brooks Gosswein and reliever Ricky Aievoli in earning a 4-1 win at Palatine.
That leaves Barrington at 21-6 overall and 11-0 in the league.
Against the Pirates (12-12, 6-5), Tyler Acosta had an RBI double and Jeff Korus and Will Yorton both had a pair of hits.
Gosswein worked 5⅔ innings, allowing 4 hits and 4 walks with 4 strikeouts. Aievoli gave up 1 hit in the remainder to earn a save.
John Weber had a 3-for-3 day for Palatine.
Prospect 8, Wheeling 0: Junior starter Ryan Howe was in top form, striking out six and allowing 5 hits to help the MSL East co-leaders stay on top in the MSL East.
Howe also doubled as part of a 2-for-3 day for Prospect (13-8, 10-1), which also got big hitting results from Nick DeCapri (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Ryan Roggeman (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and John Czseslowski and Grant Whitebloom (2 hits each).
Andy Shover and Jalen Dennis had 2 hits for Wheeling (9-13, 5-6).
Buffalo Grove 14, Rolling Meadows 1: The visiting Bison kept their share of the MSL East lead by bashing out 14 hits and getting a fine combo pitching performance.
T.J. Consertina allowed the Mustangs their only hit in a 5-inning start, and Andy Greenberg tossed 2 scoreless relief innings.
Riley Rundquist finished 2-for-3 with a double and 4 RBI, and Zach Fricke was 3-for-4 with a double 3 RBI.
Other top producers for the Bison (20-1-1, 10-1) included John Carpinelli and Carter Gledhill (2 hits each) and Chase Marsh (double).
Meadows slipped to 4-16 and 2-9.
Fremd 2, Conant 1: Eric Bennes came up with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Vikings in MSL West play.
Starter Victor Fujiu worked 6 innings for Fremd (11-11, 6-5), and Tom Narey pitched a hitless seventh.
Zach Goodman had a pair of hits and drove in the Vikings' other run.
Jack Reiger and Quinn Fitzgerald had the hits for Conant (7-16, 2-9).
Hoffman Estates 11, Schaumburg 1 (6 inn.): Dakota Slingerland finished 2-for-3 with a homer and 3 RBI to pace the host Hawks in MSL West action.
Dylan Bloom doubled, and Nick Grybos and Lucas Barnes both had 2 hits for Hoffman Estates (7-11, 6-5).
Jon Keller pitched all 6 innings, striking out 10 and allowing 2 hits as Hoffman Estates climbed into a three-way tied for second place in the West with Palatine and Fremd.
Leyden 5, Hindsale South 1: Michael Wilms (6 IP) and two relievers teamed up to keep the Hornets' bats quiet as the host Eagles earned a West Suburban Gold win.
Matt Ozanic went 3-for-3 with a double to lead Leyden (12-4).
Deerfield 3, Maine West 0: Cory Scholler had a pair of hits but the visiting Warriors (6-15) were limited to 3 total in a CSL North loss on the road.
