Urbana man gets 90-year sentence for holdup, gunplay

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - A central Illinois man received a total of 90 years in prison for an armed robbery and subsequently firing his gun in the direction of Champaign County sheriff's deputies.

Judge Tom Difanis on Monday sentenced 22-year-old Kelvin Hartfield to 40 years in prison for the July 26 armed robbery of a gasoline station. The judge handed the Urbana man a 50-year sentence for firing in the direction of four deputies who happened upon Hartfield after the gas station holdup.

Before being sentenced, Hartfield said he was innocent of armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Hartfield will have to serve at least half of the 40 years Difanis gave him for the gas station armed robbery and 85 percent of the 50 years for shooting in the deputies' direction before being eligible for parole.
