Parker plays winning tune on wrestling mat
In his profile on the University of Illinois wrestling website, Emery Parker lists his favorite hobby as playing the guitar.
The former Warren standout, who was second in the 2014 IHSA state meet, strung together some impressive numbers this past winter in his redshirt sophomore season.
He finished with a 30-10 record that included 5 falls.
Parker won the Northern Iowa Open and the Kaufman Brand Open and placed fifth at the Big Ten championships.
He went 2-2 at the NCAA championships, upsetting No. 6 seed Myles Martin (Ohio State).
The academic all Big Ten performer placed fifth in the conference championships with a record of 4-2. His fastest pin of the season (0:37) came against Michigan's Ernest Battaglia. Parker upset No. 11 seed Nicholas Gravina of Rutgers 8-6
Baseball
Carthage senior Jordan Wiegold (Mundelein) leads the Red Men (13-13) with 4 home runs and 9 doubles and he is batting .270 with a .506 slugging percentage. His 24 runs are second most on the team.
Wiegold was named "D3baseball-com" first-team All-Central Region and American Baseball Coaches Association second-team all-region last year.
Dickson commits
Warren junior basketball standout Kaylen Dickson announced via twitter that she has committed to Wake Forest. The 5-foot-11 junior guard was a repeat all-area selection this winter and three-year varsity player for Blue Devils coach John Stanczykiewicz.
She compiled her best season, averaging 15.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.6 steals and 1.6 blocks per game.
"Kaylen continues to show improvement as a basketball player," Stanczykiewicz said after the season. "I think she's really exploded onto the scene as an athlete and the way she can affect a game both offensively and defensively. She can do things on the floor athletically that not a lot of girls can do. She's an inside-outside threat where she's really good at attacking the basket and yet she can step back and hit 3s. She's probably one of the tougher matchups defensively that any team has because she's so versatile."
Men's golf
Augustana senior Eric Swanson (Vernon Hills) shot 154 (74-80) and was tied for 33rd at the Illinois Wesleyan Spring Invitational on April 7-8 at Ironwood Country Club in Normal. The Vikings placed 13th out of 21 teams.
Men's hockey
Wisconsin senior Aidan Cavallini (Barrington) was named the winner of the 2017 Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award.
The award honors the memory of Hines, a former Army West Point player who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2005.
It's awarded to a player "who displays exemplary sportsmanship, is supremely competitive, intelligent and extraordinarily conditioned with an unmatched work ethic."
Cavallini entered his senior season at Wisconsin with no collegiate goals. He scored six in his final year, starting with a Dec. 9 victory at Michigan.
A finance major and a Big Ten All-Academic honoree, Cavallini also serves the community with volunteer activities.
Men's track
Carthage sophomore Suneed Ahmed (Grayslake Central) placed fourth out of 27 competitors in the 5000-meter run (15:18.19) in the Benedictine Relays at the Village of Lisle-Benedictine Sports Complex.
Softball
Carthage freshman infielder Brooke Sefcik (Wauconda) belted a solo home run to give Carthage a 1-0 lead in the third inning of its 8-0 win over Ripon in the first game of a doubleheader. She then cleaned the bases with a 3-run home run to give Carthage a 6-0 advantage in the fourth innings.
Carthage senior shortstop Kayla Uhwat-Vicicondi (Grant) had 2 hits in the game.
Sefcik added a double in the Lady Reds' 9-1 win in Game 2, which extended their win streak to 11 games, the third-longest in school history.
The sweep gives Carthage a 20-8, 9-1 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin record. The Lady Reds now hold more victories than last season (19) with 12 games remaining on the 2017 slate.
