Boys water polo: Barrington, BG to meet in MSL championship

The matchup for the Mid-Suburban League's boys water polo championship is all set: Barrington against Buffalo Grove.

The Broncos wrapped up their second Mid-Suburban West championship in the last four seasons by topping their nearest divisional challenger, Conant, 11-7 on Monday.

Senior Mitch Gavars had 4 goals and 5 steals and Kyle Mitchell also had 4 scores for the the Broncos, who improved to 17-1 overall and 8-0 in the conference. Conant slipped to 11-3 and 6-2.

Goalie Harris Dibek helped keep the Cougars close by stopping 23 shots and Alec Burke scored 4 goals.

Buffalo Grove improved to 17-6 overall and is unbeaten in the MSL East after a 10-6 decision over Elk Grove.

Kevin Carr, Kenny Velu and Nick Roberts each had 3 goals to lead the way for Buffalo Grove, which trailed 5-2 at the half.

Nick Rosenorn paced Elk Grove (8-12, 4-4) with 3 goals.

Palatine 12, Fremd 11: Jerome Gabriel finished with a team-best 4 goals, including the go-ahead score late in the fourth quarter, as host Palatine earned an MSL West win.

Dylan White had 3 goals for the Pirates (4-12, 3-5) and Glenn Ingebritson and Sean O'Brien both had a pair.

Derek Warnstedt led all scorers for Fremd (9-8, 4-4) with 6 goals and Tarun Pothanker had 3.

St. Viator 13, Maine South 10: Stephen Battin finished with 4 goals and Tyler Coupe and Matt Frank both had a pair to help the Lions picked up a nonconference win as goalie Tim Bansfield stopped 4 shots.

Schaumburg 11, Hoffman Estates 3: The Saxons improved to 8-11 overall and 3-5 in the MSL West while the Hawks dropped to 1-20 and 0-8.

Hersey 16, Rolling Meadows 4: The Huskies improved to 13-5 overall and 6-2 in the MSL East, while the Mustangs dropped to 0-12 and 0-7.

Girls

Prospect's girls water polo team clinched its second straight Mid-Suburban League championship game appearance by defeating Wheeling 9-1 on Monday.

The Knights, who led 7-0 at the half, got 2 goals each from Kate Colehour, Ann Fulk and Colleen Doyle to remain undefeated in the East at 8-0.

Prospect has a 2-game lead over Hersey with 2 divisional games left but is assured of the spot in the title game after having defeated the Huskies twice head-to-head.

Goalie Mary Clare McAleer stopped 10 shots for Prospect (17-5 overall).

Conant 5, Barrington 3 (OT): Senior Lea Cejvan finished with 4 goals, including the only 2 scores in OT as host Conant took over first place in the MSL West.

Aly Wooley also had a goal for the Cougars (13-6, 7-1), while Cejvan also had 3 steals and earned an ejection, and goalie Cam Rosas stopped 16 shots.

Jackie West, Nicole Runtz and Alyssa Schmidts scored for Barrington (14-4, 6-2).

Hersey 10, Rolling Meadows 7: Madison Burkhalter and Karolina Niemiec finished with 3 goals each and Katie Lindgren and Andie Dougherty both had a pair to lift the host Huskies (15-2, 6-2) in MSL East action.

Besty Zanocco and Maggie Goodwin both had 3 goals for Rolling Meadows (8-13, 2-6).

Goalie Emily VanGrinsven stopped 17 shots for Hersey.

Schaumburg 15, Hoffman Estates 1: Hannah Pearson (7 goals), Sidney Rosenblum (5) and Ingrid Hay (2) led the scoring effort as the host Saxons improved to 11-7 overall and 4-4 in the MSL West.

Abigail Fuscone had the goal for the Hawks (2-15, 0-8).

Fremd 11, Palatine 5: Senior Emily Kini, celebrating her 18th birthday, came up with a game-high 8 goals to pace host Fremd in MSL West action.

The Vikings, who got 7 saves from Caitlyn Mazur, improved to 8-12 overall and 5-3 in the West.

Ashley Helminski and Kaley Mockus both had 2 goals for Palatine (4-20, 2-6).

Maine West 9, Vernon Hills 1: Annie Schertler and Kristen Burger both had 3 goals as the Warriors rolled to a nonconference victory.
