Elgin man gets prison after stealing guns in break-in

A 22-year-old Elgin man who stole guns, electronics and jewelry from an Elgin home in November pleaded guilty to residential burglary Friday.

Chefonne L. Montgomery was sentenced to 5½ years in prison and ordered to pay $459 in fines in exchange for his guilty plea to the Class 1 felony.

The stolen weapons included two handguns and an AK-47 rifle, prosecutors said.

A relative of Montgomery's led police to him after seeing photographs of Montgomery holding the weapons, which police subsequently traced to the homeowners, prosecutors said.

Montgomery received credit for 154 days he has spent in custody since his arrest.
