Chicago archbishop leads march and pays for shooting victims

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Cardinal Blaze Cupich (blayz SOO'-pich) led hundreds of marchers through one of the city's most violence-plagued neighborhoods to pray the annual Stations of the Cross and demand an end to gun violence.

Carrying a cross on his shoulder, Cupich on Friday stopped at several street corners to pray as people recited the names of those killed since January.

Chicago police statistics indicate there have been about 750 people shot in the city this year, with about 140 resulting in death. A prominent victim was criminal court Judge Raymond Myles, who was shot to death this week in a robbery attempt. One man has been charged in that case so far.

Cupich told crowd members to pledge to work with each other so that young people tempted to violence "will put down their weapons and join us in a way that builds a better city."
