One dies after Huntley man accused of driving car into home

An 84-year-old Huntley man has been charged with drunken driving after his car was driven into a home in the Sun City active adult retirement community Feb. 4, injuring two residents, one of whom later died, police said.

The 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis drove through a yard and struck a home on the 13300 block of Honeysuckle Drive in the area of Del Webb Boulevard and Hemmer Road, police said. The driver, Donald F. Helfer, of the 12300 block of Black Oak Trail, was the sole occupant of the car. He is charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence causing great bodily injury.

The male and female residents of the home were injured as the vehicle significantly damaged the bedroom area.

All parties were taken to Centegra Hospital-Huntley. The woman was later flown to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for further treatment. She died Sunday.

Helfer has been released after posting $15,000 bail. He has an April 26 court date in McHenry County.
